Kim Brooks
MSW, MFA
Psychotherapist
We all carry a story that hasn’t been fully heard. Maybe this story involves a major transition: a breakup, the stress of going to college or graduate school, the adjustment to parenthood, a shift in your career, or the emptying nest. Maybe you long for intimacy and connection but find yourself repeating painful patterns. You might even feel unsure who your true self really is—or what it needs to heal and grow.
As a relational psychotherapist with a background in creative writing and a Masters in Social Work, Kim brings warmth, curiosity, and depth to her work with clients. Her approach is grounded in self- psychology, attachment theory, feminist thought, and narrative therapy, which invites us to discover how certain stories about ourselves were shaped—by culture, family, gender roles, trauma, and past relationships. We ask: Who assigned you this role? What version of you has been overlooked? What new story is waiting to be told?
In individual therapy, Kim explores the emotional and relational patterns formed in early life. She believes your symptoms are not pathologies to be cured, but messages—clues from a self that has not yet had the space to become fully known or voiced. This work is especially meaningful for women and mothers who were taught to silence their needs, or for neurodivergent and creative people whose sensitivity was pathologized instead of honored. Whether you’re coming alone, with a partner, or with your family, Kim offers a space where your voice can emerge, your lived experience can be honored, and your story can begin to shift on your own terms.
Kim has experience working with adults, adolescents, couples, and families. She began her career as a therapist in community mental health and holds a strong commitment to social justice. Before earning her MSW from Loyola University, she earned an MFA in creative writing from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa. Kim has published two books, including a memoir which explored her relationship to motherhood and the challenges mothers face in trying to live up to cultural expectations and double-standards. Kim has found writing and storytelling to be an essential part of her own personal growth, and enjoys drawing on her experience as a writer and writing teacher to help clients explore their own creativity as a source of healing and self-discovery.
