Sarah Cooper
MA, LPc
Psychotherapist
Sarah (she/her) is a lover of good stories. In undergrad, she studied journalism and learned to ask important questions and look for the human element in each story. Later, she traded journalism for mental health counseling where her love of stories is a guiding principle in her work. She sees therapy as a chance to examine the narratives we tell ourselves and rewrite our own stories in a way that empowers us.
She believes healing happens through real connection, and that therapy provides a unique opportunity for that. She fosters growth through thoughtful conversations, gentle challenging, and unconditional positive regard. It’s in this safe space that clients make long-lasting changes.
Sarah specializes in working with complex trauma including religious trauma, childhood emotional neglect, and patterns of family enmeshment. With individuals, she helps clients let go of shame, people-pleasing, self-doubt, and feelings of worthlessness to embrace a new way of being. She works with couples looking to deepen their connection with one another. Couples therapy can be preventative, improving emotional intimacy even when nothing feels “wrong.” Sarah offers premarital counseling in either a faith-friendly or nonreligious space, depending on clients’ preference.
As a multicultural therapist, she is sensitive to the unique concerns of those with marginalized identities and welcomes clients from a variety of backgrounds. An important aspect of her approach is acknowledging systemic influences on individual concerns.

more about me
Sarah’s curiosity is a guiding force in her life. Growing up in Texas, Angola, and Alaska has taught her to lean into the unfamiliar, rather than shy away. She fosters this curiosity through reading at least two books at a time and exploring all that Chicago has to offer. She enjoys camping, film photography, and baking lumpy loaves of sourdough bread.
